    Our aim is:

    • To develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life.
    • To analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it.
    • To develop a critical approach to economic models and methods of enquiry.

    Curriculum

    6th Form
    The department follows the OCR Economics GCE AS and A level specification.

    Lower Sixth AS Award H061
    Each paper represents 50% of the AS marks and 25% of the A2 marks.

    Unit 1: AS F581
    Markets in Action
    1 Hour 30 minutes written examination.

    Unit 2: AS F582
    The National and International Economy
    1 Hour 30 minutes written examination.

    Upper Sixth A2 Award H461
    Each paper represents 25% of the A level marks.

    Unit 3: A2 F584
    Transport Economics
    2 Hour written paper.

    Unit 4: A2 F585
    The Global Economy
    2 Hour written paper.

    Homework Policy

    Homework is set regularly and students are also expected to read widely around the subject and keep up to date with current economic developments.

    Marking Policy

    The department follows the whole school marking policy. Regular feedback to students ensures they are aware of how to improve their grades in Economics.

    Other Information

    • Most students go on to university, virtually all to study Economics or a related subject.
    • The department has had many successful Oxbridge entrants, mainly PPE at Oxford but also Economics at Cambridge.
    • Economics issues tend to dominate the headlines and the Government, consequently students tend to be well informed on current affairs and play a key role in the sixth form debating society.
    • Economics students are often chosen to represent the school in prestigious national competitions e.g. the European Youth Parliament and the Bank of England challenge.
