BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Health & Social Care

The Health and Social Care sector employs some of the most talented and brilliant people the country has to offer. The NHS is the main employer and continually needs doctors, nurses, ambulance staff and support staff. There are further opportunities to work for the NHS in social care, in hospitals, educational settings and residential homes.

A BTEC in Health and Social Care offers a practical and relevant start to a career in the caring professions.

BTECs in Health and Social Care are recognised and respected by employers, professional institutions and higher education establishments.

  • Students are entered for the Edexcel BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care. This is equivalent to 1 GCSE
  • It is a Level 2 qualification; however, it is graded at Level 2 Pass, Level 2 Merit, Level 2 Distinction, Level 2 Distinction*, Level 1 and Unclassified.
  • Students study 3 Units.
  • Two of the units will be assessed through a number of assignments in which students will be awarded with a Level 2 Pass, Merit or Distinction. If Level 2 criteria are not met a Level 1 may be awarded.
  • Component 3  is a three hour externally assessed component completed in supervised exam conditions

Curriculum

Component 1: Human Lifespan Development

This unit provides students with the opportunity to explore how we grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate the factors that affect this growth and development. Students will go on to consider how these factors are interrelated.

This unit is assessed through assignments that are set and marked by the tutor in accordance with the grading criteria set by Edexcel.

Component 2: Health & Social Care Services

All people use Health & Social Care services at some time of their lives. This components aims for students to understand the different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing them. Students will gain understanding of how care values are applied in health and social care settings, and their importance to work in the sector. They will need to demonstrate care values and review their own practice.

It is advisable for pupils to secure a year 10 work experience placement in a care setting to assist with this.

Learning in this unit will be assessed through assignments that are set and marked by the tutor in accordance with the grading criteria set by Edexcel.

Component 3: Health & Wellbeing

This unit will allow students to investigate the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and how to design a health and wellbeing improvement plan.

Learning in this unit will be externally assessed. A task worth 60 marks will be completed under supervised exam conditions. The supervised assessment period is a maximum of three hours and must be arranged in the period timetabled from the examining body Pearsons. Assessment availability is twice a year: February and May/June from 2019 onwards.

Learners will be given a case study and will assess an individual’s health and wellbeing, drawing on their understanding of life events from Component 1. They will design a health and wellbeing improvement plan that draws on their knowledge of services and care values from Component 2.
