Key Stage 4

GCSE Learners follow the AQA Geography GCSE specification. The aim of the GCSE course is to enable learners to build on their Key Stage 3 knowledge and skills. Broadly there are four main aims and assessment points:

  1. To develop and extend their knowledge of location, places, environments and processes. To know geographical material.
  2. To gain an understanding of the interactions between people and environments. To think like a geographer. 
  3. To develop and extend their range of skills including fieldwork skills. To study like a geographer.
  4. To apply knowledge, understanding and skills to real world contexts. To apply geography. 

Learner will be examined over three papers:

Paper 1 Living with the physical environment

How it's assessed

  • Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 88 marks (including 3 marks for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology (SPaG))
  • 35% of GCSE

Paper 2 Challenges in the human environment 

How it's assessed

  • Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 88 marks (including 3 marks for SPaG)
  • 35% of GCSE

Paper 3 Geographical applications

How it's assessed

  • Written exam: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • 76 marks (including 6 marks for SPaG)
  • 30% of GCSE
  • Pre-release resources booklet made available 12 weeks before Paper 3 exam
