Key Stage 4

Year 9

Foundation year and introduction into GCSE. Pupils undertake projects based on developing pupil’s skills and developing greater knowledge and understanding within the key material areas. These include plastic, metal, wood, textiles, paper/board and electronics. Pupils will develop there practical skills through design skills and learn how to communicate design ideas effectively. Greater emphasis will be placed on CAD/CAM and the use of modern manufacturing processes including laser cutting and 3D printing.

Year 10 & 11

GCSE course content reinforces pupil’s skills and develops a higher level of knowledge and understanding of topics touched on in Year 9. Students undertake mini projects in Year 10 that are linked to the theory content of the course. In the summer term of Year 10 they will begin the controlled assessment unit of the course. Pupils will be able to identify preferred materials to undertake their controlled assessment in order to best answer the exam board design tasks.
