Headteacher's Message

It has been another incredibly busy and successful week at Upton-by-Chester High School, with a wide range of activities taking place both in and beyond the classroom. In particular, this week saw the launch of our first combined Sports and Health Day, more on that shortly!

Earlier in the week, members of our Eco Action Group once again took part in Chester Zoo's annual Takeover Day. Our learners spent the day engaging with visitors, raising awareness of water consumption and the importance of water conservation. They also showcased an interactive game they had designed to demonstrate the hidden water costs involved in producing many everyday items. The day was a great success, and visitors were hugely impressed by how confidently and knowledgeably our learners were able to explain the work they have been undertaking on this important global issue. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented the school.

This week also saw our annual Pride celebration. It was a truly uplifting event, celebrating diversity, inclusion and the values that are so important to our school community. The day was planned and led by learners from across the school, who worked incredibly hard to organise such a positive and enjoyable celebration. Their enthusiasm and leadership were evident throughout the day, and they should be extremely proud of what they achieved.

On Tuesday we held our first combined Sports and Health Day. Over at the athletics field, it was fantastic to see learners participating with such determination and sportsmanship, encouraging one another and celebrating each other's successes. This year's competition was particularly memorable, with several long-standing school records, some of which had stood for decades, being broken in both track and field events:

Lucas S Year 8 ran the 1500m in 4m43s

Jamie W Year 9 ran the 1500m in 4m39s

Nate C Year 9 ran the 300m in 40.05s (honourable mention to Henry K Year 9 who beat the record in the race before Nate & held it for 2 minutes!).

9X6YU boys beat the 4x100m record which is now 51.06s

Congratulations to all of our competitors for their outstanding performances.

Meanwhile, back at school, learners took part in a series of engaging health-focused presentations, exploring a range of topics designed to support their physical and emotional wellbeing. Our guest presenter commented afterwards on just how engaged, respectful and enthusiastic our learners were in every session. Receiving such positive feedback from an external visitor is always pleasing and reflects the excellent attitudes our young people demonstrate every day.

To round off another busy week, all Year 8 learners are taking part in a Performing Arts Enrichment Day. The school has been full of creativity, energy and activity, and we look forward to sharing more about this fantastic experience in next week's newsletter.

Last year, our school community raised funds to support MIDIBART School in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. We were delighted to receive an update this week outlining the difference those donations have made. The funds have helped the school improve its facilities following storm damage, purchase essential medicines and cleaning supplies, and support the ongoing education of some of the city's most vulnerable young people. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed and are proud that our community has been able to make such a meaningful difference to the lives of others.

As we approach the end of another successful week, I would like to thank all of our learners, staff and families for their continued support. It has been wonderful to see so many opportunities for our young people to learn, compete, create and celebrate together.

With very best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

Homework Year 7-13 Parents/Carers

Dear Parents and Carers,

Show My Homework (Satchel One)  is where all homework details will be posted for Parents/Carers and Learners to access.  Parents/Carers can see the instructions, and the due dates for each piece of homework.

We expect learners to check their Show My Homework account daily to ensure that they organise their week, in order to complete set tasks on time.  Evidence based research and our experience tells us that homework completion significantly improves learners' progress.  The research also informs us that when Parents/Carers are involved and supportive with homework, learners’ progress is even further enhanced.  This additional progress can be up to an additional 5 months of progress per year!

It is fantastic to see that the majority of our Parents/Carers are  engaging with the platform regularly and checking the homework tasks that have been set so far.  However, we are keen to support all Parents/Carers in using this platform and so if you are having any difficulties using the platform please do get in touch with me.

Incomplete homework

We do not use the markbook facility on Show My Homework.  When homework has not been completed on time the teacher will put a question mark symbol (?) on the Edulink register.  To monitor the number of Homeworks not completed, Parents/Carers can access Edulink.

Common Questions and Answers for Parents/Carers

I have attached some answers to the common questions that Parents/Carers have had.  This can be accessed on the the following link Common questions for parents | Satchel Help Center

Once again, thank you for your ever continuing support, and please do get in touch if you need any further support with Show My Homework.

Kindest regards

Mrs Bradbury

Deputy Headteacher

Stay Safe Bulletin: Staying Safe over the Summer Break

Summer is a time to rest, have fun and see friends, but it is also important to make safe choices. If something does not feel right, if you feel unsafe, or if you are worried about someone else, speak to a trusted adult as soon as possible.

During the summer break, remember that help is still available. You are never wasting anyone’s time by asking for support.

Make the right call this summer

Crisis and Resilience Fund

We are writing to inform families about summer holiday support from the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF).

Summer holiday support is available for families

Families who receive Free School Meals and need help with essential food costs during the summer holidays can apply for support through the Council’s Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF).

Applications for summer holiday payments will open on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 and close on Monday, 31 August 2026.

Apply online: https://www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/benefits-and-welfare-help/cost-of-living/crisis-and-resilience-fund/school-holiday-support-payment

Changes to the CRF from September 2026

The Crisis and Resilience Fund replaced the Household Support Fund in April 2026. It ensures that financial support is available for families who need it and gives longer term support to boost income and manage debt.

To support families during the transition to the Crisis and Resilience Fund, so far payments have been awarded to all applicants who were in receipt of FSM and provided requested evidence. The same approach will apply during the summer holidays.

From September 2026, however, the Crisis and Resilience Fund will solely be there to help people who experience an unexpected financial crisis. Applicants will need to explain the financial shock they have experienced and how this has placed them in crisis.

Expanded Free School Meal eligibility from September 2026

From September 2026, all pupils in households receiving Universal Credit will become entitled to free school meals (FSM).

Pupils who already qualify because their household earnings are £7,400 or less will continue to qualify. The change will extend entitlement to more families, meaning more children will be able to apply to receive Free School Meals.

To find out more, visit:

Not just school holidays

If you aren’t in receipt of Free School Meals, the Crisis and Resilience Fund can still help you with various costs. Visit the webpage for more information about support with:

  • Crisis payments
  • Help in Emergencies for Local People (HELP)
  • Housing Payments and Discretionary Hardship Payments
  • Heating oil support

Other support

There is also information and support available on the Council’s cost of living webpages, which bring together resources about financial help, advice services, and emergency assistance:

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE: construction of the HyNet Carbon Dioxide Pipeline (Main Onshore Pipeline)

Construction sites are dangerous places and can present significant hazards, which are managed by trained personnel. Hazards can include heavy machinery, open excavations, deep water, hazardous substances and restricted areas. These hazards are not always obvious to the untrained eye and can result in serious injury.

The safety of local communities, particularly children and young people, is our top priority. As such, each site has protective measures in place to ensure they remain fully secure once the team has finished for the day, these include:

  • Site fencing
  • Security lighting
  • Security personnel
  • CCTV monitored by emergency services

We understand that communities might be curious about the ongoing operations and children and young people might be out exploring over the summer holidays. To ensure that safety measures are adhered to, we kindly ask for your support in reinforcing the following key messages with children:

  • Construction sites are dangerous and are strictly off-limits
  • No trespassing is permitted, even outside working hours
  • Warning signs, fencing, and barriers must not be ignored or tampered with
  • Children should always keep a safe distance from site boundaries and equipment

If you  have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can email us at hello@hynethub.co.uk or call us on 0113 395 4495. More information about the Main Onshore Pipeline is available on the project website: hynethub.co.uk/mainonshorepipeline

Thank you in advance for your support in helping to promote safe and appropriate behaviour near construction sites and in the local community.
