Headteachers Message

Welcome to our regular weekly bulletin.  As always, there is plenty to share this week!

As you will have seen in the bulletin last week the public engagement process for the new building has started.  There is an opportunity to come to school on Tuesday 10th December between 4pm and 7pm and meet the team who will be building the school and look in more detail at the plans.  Further details of the new build and the public engagement event are on the school website - https://www.uptonhigh.co.uk/newbuild

This week we have sent home our new style report for Year 9.  So far, the feedback that we have received has been very positive.  We will be asking for your feedback more formally following the Year 9 Progress Review Evening which takes place next Thursday.  There is a video on the assessment part of the school website which explains the changes we have made and why they have changed.

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting 30 of our Year 7 learners for a "celebration break".  This was in recognition of the excellent start they have made at Upton-by-Chester High School.  This happens after each set of reports where we identify learners who have achieved high scores for their attitude to learning in lessons.

This week we have also seen the published data for learners who completed their GCSEs in the summer.  The learners have once again achieved well above average progress based on the progress of learners across the country.  We are really proud of this and particularly pleased that this important measure of our success as a school has continued to be very strong.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Yours faithfully,

Mr L Cummins

Bike Safety

A growing number of learners are choosing to travel to and from school by bike. We wanted to take the time to remind you of our expectations, so that they are safe.

  1. Learners are requested to push their bikes out of school and not mount their bike until they are safely past duty staff and clear of other learners. Staff will be conducting checks next week and contacting home if we feel they have not followed our school rule of being SAFE.
  2. Learners on an electric bike MUST NOT ride this until on the road. The speed of an electric bike is too fast for the volume of pedestrian traffic at the end of the school day.
  3. Learners should have a front and rear light, plus a reflector. A bell would also allow others to hear them coming.
  4. Bike helmets should be worn at all times and need to fit correctly. Halfords have provided some tips on making sure you get the right size helmet:
  • Eye check – put the bike helmet on your child’s head and get them to look up. They should be able to see the bottom rim of the helmet and a gap of one or two fingers between their eyebrows.
  • Ear check – the straps of the helmet should form a V under their ears when fastened.
  • Mouth check – get them to open their mouth as wide as possible. The straps should be snug on their skin and head without moving around everywhere.
  1. Bright clothing is important when travelling to school by bike. There are lots of options available on the Halfords website that may be of use, for example vest jackets that can be worn over school clothing.

Learners who are in receipt of Free School Meals

We are in the process of arranging for parents / carers of all FSM learners to receive a £35.00 Tesco gift card, financed through Cheshire West & Chester Council’s Household Support Fund, to assist with purchasing food for your child(ren) over the Christmas holiday period.  We will be issuing one gift card for every FSM learner on roll in our school. These gift cards will be emailed to you direct by Tesco at around 8.00 a.m. on Friday 13th December.  If you cannot see the email in your Inbox please double-check your Junk Email and Clutter folders, just in case it has gone into one of them in error.

If you do not receive a gift card you were expecting please email finance@uptonhigh.co.uk and we will investigate and resolve the matter for you.

Please find attached the latest schedule of events for parents and carers of children with SEND.

Provision for children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) who are eligible through benefits-related free school meals is being offered, with some providers additionally able to offer paid for places for those not eligible based on the guidance to attend their HAF programmes.  This is in addition to other programmes being offered by providers more widely and we are encouraging families to check with mainstream providers who may be able to provide support and offer places for them to attend.

The SEND specific offer will include sessions for children and young people the chance to attend sports, sensory play, arts and crafts, problem solving activities, plus a family day that will include shelter building, forest art and crafts, campfire, problem solving activities, games, forest skills.

Places can be booked via the individual booking options for each provider, found on the following flyer.
