Headteacher's Message

Welcome to this week's edition of the Upton-by-Chester High School Spring Bulletin.

As always, there has been a lot going on in the school.  Year 11 have completed their second week of PPE (mock) examinations.  We look forward to sharing the feedback from these with them and supporting them as they build up to their GCSE examinations.  It has also been good to see the progress that Year 13 have made by reading through their reports.  As always, we are exploring all the ways we can support learners to be as successful as possible.

Whilst academic achievement is really important, we do also take every opportunity to celebrate lots of other types of achievement.  As you will probably be aware, each week a member of the Leadership Team records a message which is played to all learners on a Monday.  In this "broadcast" we share the achievements of groups of learners and individuals.  In this week's message I just wanted to highlight some of the sporting achievements from this week.  I am sure you will agree that our learners have represented themselves and the school incredibly well.

On Tuesday our Under 12s netball team attended the Sisters in Sport final and were crowned champions!

Also on Tuesday our Year 7 boys football team beat Kings School 5-1 in the Chester Cup.

On Wednesday our Year 9 boys football team beat Blacon High 5-1 to move into the Chester Cup Semi-finals.

Yesterday both of our Under 13s netball teams came third in their games with one of our own sports leaders coaching and umpiring the games.

I wish you all a very pleasant weekend.

Bike Safety

A growing number of learners are choosing to travel to and from school by bike. We wanted to take the time to remind you of our expectations, so that they are safe.

  1. Learners are requested to push their bikes out of school and not mount their bike until they are safely past duty staff and clear of other learners. Staff will be conducting checks next week and contacting home if we feel they have not followed our school rule of being SAFE.
  2. Learners on an electric bike MUST NOT ride this until on the road. The speed of an electric bike is too fast for the volume of pedestrian traffic at the end of the school day.
  3. Learners should have a front and rear light, plus a reflector. A bell would also allow others to hear them coming.
  4. Bike helmets should be worn at all times and need to fit correctly. Halfords have provided some tips on making sure you get then right size helmet.
  • Eye check – put the bike helmet on your child’s head and get them to look up. They should be able to see the bottom rim of the helmet and a gap of one or two fingers between their eyebrows.
  • Ear check – the straps of the helmet should form a V under their ears when fastened.
  • Mouth check – get them to open their mouth as wide as possible. The straps should be snug on their skin and head without moving around everywhere
  1. Bright clothing is important when travelling to school by bike. There are lots of options available on the Halfords website that may be of use, for example vest jackets that can be worn over school clothing.

British Science Week

Dear Parents and Carers,

British Science Week 2025 is fast approaching and will take place from 10th–14th March. At Upton, we are excited to celebrate Science by promoting campaigns such as I’m a Scientist and Connection to Science.

This year, we are encouraging our students to take part in UCL’s competition to design an innovative clean air filter. Additionally, we will be running an internal competition where students can showcase their creativity by developing innovative designs inspired by this year’s theme: ‘Change and Adapt’.

To inspire all students to explore their place in STEM, we will be highlighting diverse STEM role models each day. As part of our celebrations, we are thrilled to announce that Upton will be hosting its own panel discussion on the theme ‘Change and Adapt’. The panel will feature members of our KS4 Science Club, alongside teachers from Science, Technology, and Geography.

We look forward to an inspiring British Science Week!

Best regards,

Elise Holly
