Headteacher's Message

Welcome to the latest edition of the parent / carer bulletin.

Each week we produce a remote learning briefing, this is a weekly video message that a member of the leadership team records and is shared with all learners in the school during their PLaN session. This includes important messages for learners as well as the sharing of successes within our school community.  At the start of this term I was able to congratulate the learners on the part that they played in the recent Ofsted inspection.

It has been great to have the first full week back in school.  I have been really impressed with the way that the learners have returned to school and I can see from looking at the Attitude to Learning Grades across the school that they have been really positive.  Remember, you can see your own child's Attitude to Learning Grades by logging into the EduLink App https://www.edulinkone.com/#!/login.  If you need any assistance with this please contact admin@uptonhigh.co.uk.

Next week we have the Gold Duke of Edinburgh taking place.  This means some of our Sixth Form will be out completing their expedition.  We wish them well.  Also related to Sixth Form, study leave for Sixth Form commences at the end of the day on Friday 9th May.

I hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend and I look forward to seeing all the learners return to school on Tuesday 6th May 2025.

With best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

E-Bikes- Safety

An increasing number of learners are choosing to ride an E-Bike to school.

Cheshire Constabulary have provided guidance on legal E-Bikes

https://www.cheshire.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/rs/road-safety/advice-escooters/what-you-need-to-know-electric-bikes/

https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

Upton-by-Chester High School will allow legal E Bikes to be ridden as long as learners are using them sensibly and wearing a helmet.

Community Police will be carrying out spot checks until September to check that all E Bikes have no illegal modifications.

If they find any that do, they have informed school that the bikes may be seized.

You can ride an electric bike if you’re 14 or over, as long as it is an ‘electrically assisted pedal cycle’

When your bike is not a EAPC

If your electric bike does not meet the EAPC rules then it’s classed as a motorcycle or moped.

Your bike is not an EAPC if it:

·  can be propelled at more than 15.5 miles per hour (mph) by the motor

· has a continuous rated power output higher than 250 watts

· does not have pedals that can propel it

Local police officers have informed the school that if learners are found using illegally modified E-Bikes and/ or E-Scooters on public land (road or pavement) in the community, they will:

A) Seize the bike.

B) Report the learner for driving offences which will affect their ability to obtain a driving licence when they are 17.

Attendance Matters

ATTENDANCE... is monitored daily by our onsite attendance team and Pastoral Support Managers and we pride ourselves on being proactive and keeping our attendance at a high level to meet the targets set by the government. Parents /carers of young people who have low levels of attendance could be subjected to legal action being taken against them by the local authority. Early intervention by all staff and the attendance team helps to maintain good levels of attendance for all learners.

PUNCTUALITY…every learner is expected to arrive at school no later than 8.35 a.m. in readiness for registration at 8.40 a.m., each school day. If a learner arrives late for registration they will sanctioned with a break time referral, three or more will result in an afterschool centralised referral. If learners arrive after 9.15 a.m. they will be coded as unauthorised late, this equates to them missing their a.m. registration mark and only being able to obtain 50% attendance that day, along with reducing their overall attendance percentage.

APPOINTMENTS…we understand that all learners will be subject to doctors/dentist/ hospital appointments, however we do request that, where possible, these are made at the beginning or the end of the school day or outside of the school day. We do ask that your child, when possible, returns to school after any appointment and does not take the whole school day off.

To report an absence please contact school on:

(01244) 259800

To speak about any attendance related issues please contact your child’s Pastoral Support Manager or the Pastoral Support Manager for attendance (Mr S Will) on:

(01244) 259800
