Headteacher's Message

Welcome to my first parent / carer bulletin of the 2025-26 academic year.

This week started with me having the pleasure of delivering assemblies to all the learners in the school.  It was wonderful to see them all back and ready to learn.  We used the assembly to remind the learners of our mission – 'Learning to Shape the Future', and our values.  We concluded the assembly by focussing on some people who previously attended the school and shared their current success stories. I hope it proved the point that they too can go on and achieve great things.

In my last letter to you, I did say I would share some more information about the results.

Exam Success 2025
This summer, learners at Upton-by-Chester High School celebrated another year of excellent exam results. At A Level, over a quarter of all grades were A*-A and well over half were A*-B, with many learners progressing to top universities, competitive courses, and high-quality apprenticeships. Standout successes included several learners achieving multiple A*s, alongside many others making exceptional progress.

Our Year 11s also impressed with outstanding GCSE and vocational results, showing remarkable resilience after starting secondary school during the pandemic. Many achieved a string of top grades and will now continue their journey in our thriving Sixth Form.

We are incredibly proud of all our learners for their commitment, hard work, and achievements, and thank staff, parents, and carers for their vital support.

Events

As you will see from the calendar link below, there are a significant number of events happening during this half-term.  The information evenings, in particular, are an opportunity for us to share with you the key things that will be happening in each year group.  If you can attend, we look forward to seeing you at these important events.

Uniform

It has been great to see the learners return in their full uniform.  We appreciate your support in this important aspect of making sure that learners are ready for their learning in school.  If you do need any support with getting unform at any point during the year please do contact the school via the Pastoral Support Manager for the Year Group or Head of Year.   We are looking to maintain the excellent standards that have been set at the start of this term.

Sparks Maths

This year we have introduced Sparks Maths.  This is an online platform which will support your child in their maths learning.  We will be monitoring the use of this really closely as we know, when used well, it can really accelerate the process of young people.  You will have received an email about Sparks Maths earlier this week.  If you have not received this or need any support please contact your child's maths teacher or contact the school via the admin@uptonhigh.co.uk email address.

Upgraded Information Communication Technology System

During the summer holiday, the school upgraded its ICT system in anticipation of moving into the new building.  We decided that making this move now would mean that there would be fewer changes all at the same time when we move into our new building, hopefully in Summer 2027.  Unfortunately, there have been some unexpected challenges and these have impacted on a range of systems in school, including emails.  If you have sent an email to school, and it is beyond the 48 hours that we would normally respond can I firstly apologise and ask that you resend the message to us.

That is all for this week.  I hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing all the learners returning on Monday morning.

With very best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

Important Information: Attendance

Dear Parents and Carers,

My name is Stuart Will, and I'm the Pastoral Manager for Attendance and Family Support at Upton-by-Chester High School. With 20 years of experience in Education Welfare, my primary role is to ensure all learners attend school regularly and on time. All learners need to be on site by 8:35 a.m., ready for registration at 8:40 a.m.

I'm always available to meet with you to discuss any issues that might be affecting your child's attendance. My goal is to work with families to overcome challenges together.

However, if attendance remains unsatisfactory and parents/carers don't engage with the school or myself (for example, by missing meetings or not providing requested medical evidence), I will support the local authority in prosecutions for non-school attendance. Please be aware that if legal action is taken, your case would be heard at the magistrates’ court, and you could receive a criminal record. This is always a last resort.

Regarding requests for absence during term time, I adhere strictly to local authority guidelines. There's no automatic entitlement to 5 days of leave. Each application is individually assessed by the senior leadership team, and a letter will be sent detailing their decision. If a leave of absence is declined, you may be subject to a fixed penalty fine. We encourage you to use the thirteen weeks of school holidays for any planned trips.

Please don't hesitate to contact me to discuss any attendance-related concerns or to arrange an appointment.

Kindest Regards,

Mr. S. M. Will

Information regarding the School Canteen/ Free School Meals/ Cashless Catering

School Canteen

The school caterers, Aspens, provide a variety of options to cater for all our learners. Details of the current menu on offer and Meal Deals available can be found here

Meal Deals represent a particularly good value-for-money lunch option for learners at £2.70. This is a very cost effective way for learners to get a good amount of nourishment, rather than purchasing items separately which would be more expensive.

You can add credit to your child’s account via the school’s online payment system Scopay. If you do not have an online payment account, please email finance@uptonhigh.co.uk to request one. Whilst the school exercises a degree of flexibility and understanding to ensure that all learners have access to food, this should not be relied upon and you should ensure that there is always sufficient credit on your child's account before they go to make any purchases.

Free School Meals

Learners in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM) are allocated a daily allowance of £2.70, which is aligned with the cost of a Meal Deal. The allowance is applied to their account at the start of each day for the child to spend as they see fit, although it is intended for lunchtime provision. You may wish to consider providing extra food or additional funds to your child’s account if they wish to eat something at Break as well.

Please be aware that any unused credit is not carried over and does not accumulate. Any purchases that take a child’s spending over the daily allowance will be charged to their account, leaving them in deficit. In such instances, parents/carers will be required to top-up their child’s account with funds to clear the debt.

Cashless Catering Balances

Please ensure that your child’s catering balance is kept in sufficient credit that they are able to make their desired purchases. If for any reason a child does not have sufficient credit on a given day, they should seek out a member of school staff in the canteen to request support in that instance.

Whilst we exercise a degree of understanding and support, a report is run each Wednesday highlighting any learners whose accounts have fallen into deficit and a communication will be sent to the relevant parents/carers requesting that any negative balances are settled as a matter of urgency.

Please discuss your child’s spending habits and choices with them so that they are aware of their options and are getting the most from their credit or FSM entitlement.

Cycling to school

SAFE: Your child must wear a helmet if they are choosing to cycle to school. Members of the senior leadership team will be checking over the coming days.
