Headteacher's Message

Welcome to this week's parent/ carer bulletin.

The learners have continued to make a great start to the new academic year.  I have been really impressed with the way the vast majority of learners have been able to maintain an excellent attitude to learning alongside 100% attendance and great punctuality.  We know that these are the ingredients for being successful learners.  Myself and the leadership team are going to continue to monitor all these important attributes closely over the coming weeks to ensure everyone gives themselves the very best chances this year.

On a similar note I would like to single out Year 11 who have really impressed us with the way they have retuned to school and their high level of motivation for success in their GCSEs.  To support this we are starting after-school intervention classes earlier this year and they will start from Monday.  Parents / Carers should have received a letter regarding these interventions and we will keep these under review. On Monday morning Year 11 will attend a focussed session on how to revise effectively and then on Tuesday evening we have a session for parents / carers to support you in supporting our young people in achieving the success that they are capable of.

This week we also delivered our Year 10 Information evening session.  The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of Key Stage Four. Thank you to everyone who attended.  The slides from all the Information Evening sessions can be found on the school's website by following this link:

Next week we have our Open Evening where we welcome families who are considering us as their choice for school place in September 2026.  It is an evening I always look forward to particularly as it is a time that our learners shine telling others what they like about the school.

I wanted to remind you all about the daily breakfast club in the school canteen from 8am until 8.30am. Breakfast items can be purchased but this is not compulsory. Learners in receipt of free school meals can enjoy free breakfast in addition to their lunch allocation.

With very best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

Stay Safe @ Upton - Focus: Hate Speech

THIS HAS NO PLACE IN OUR SCHOOL AND OUR COMMUNITY

WHAT IS HATE SPEECH? It is speech that attacks a person or a group on the basis of attributes such as race, religion, ethnic origin, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. Words, name-calling, hateful phrases, casual racist, misogynistic and homophobic, biphobic or transphobic comments - they all have an impact.

HOW CAN WE SPEAK OUT WHEN WE WITNESS HATE SPEECH?

1. Counterspeech:

One of the ways we can fight hate speech is by speaking up about equality, inclusivity, and diversity. Some refer to this method as counterspeech. The more we can undermine hate speech with loving words, logical arguments and truth-telling, the more that hate speech will begin to lose its power.

2. Challenge hate:

If you see or hear someone using language which makes another person feel upset, marginalised, hurt or unsafe, you should inform a member of staff immediately so we

can ensure it is stopped.

3. True Vision:

If you witness a hate crime outside of school you can report this to True Vision which is a scheme being supported by all police forces. The police take hate crime very seriously and will record and investigate this offence even if you do not want to give your details. You may specify how you want to be contacted and say if contacting you would cause you any difficulties. The police will not pass on your details without your consent .Click here for more details or go onto https://www.report-it.org.uk/your_police_force

IF YOU ARE THE VICTIM

Everyone has the fundamental right to be protected from abuse. We will not tolerate hostility or hate speech towards any members of our school community because of their disability, race, ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. Every student has the right to feel safe, to be who you are and to be treated well. If you are the victim of hate speech, talk to your Form Tutor, Head of Year, Pastoral Support Manager or any trusted adult.

WE WILL ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOU AND SUPPORT YOU
