Headteacher's Message

Happy New Year, I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful break.

It has been a pleasure to welcome all the learners back to school this week.  Whilst the weather has occasionally presented some challenges in terms of the logistics in school, the learners have responded incredibly positively and made a fantastic start to the new term.

This week has been about re-establishing routines and remaking connections following the break.

This week I had the opportunity to meet with learners in Year 9 who excelled in their Year 9 Attitude to Learning Grades on their most recent reports.  It was an opportunity for me to congratulate them on their diligence and hard work over the previous term.  I look forward to meeting with the groups of learners from across other year groups as the term progresses.

This term also sees the launch of the latest Engage@Upton programme of events. Please see below the timetable for each year group.  We want as many learners as possible to be part of this and benefit from the opportunities that are available.

In terms of events in this half-term, we have the Year 9 Options Event and a live Year 11 Learner Progress Evening (Previously referred to as Parents' Evenings).  Please make sure if your child is in Year 9 or Year 11 you have this on your calendar to attend.  They are really important events and working together we can support every young person in our school to make the progress they are so very capable of.

New Chair of Governors

Earlier in the year we shared with you the very sad news of the passing of our Chair of Governors, Julie Minion.  Julie had been a very strong supporter of the school and had done a great deal over many years as a Governor and then Chair of Governors.

In the last Full Governing Body Meeting Governors appointed Sarah Curtis, a local authority Governor and formerly parent Governor to be the Chair of Governors for the remainder of this academic year.  Sarah has a great deal of knowledge of the school and also has been on the Governing Body for a significant period of time.

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing learners in school on Monday.

With very best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

Why Good Attendance Matters

Regular attendance is key to a learner’s success. Every lesson builds on the last, and missing sessions can make it harder for learners to keep up, affect confidence, and impact achievement.

At Upton-by-Chester High School, we work closely with parents and carers to support excellent attendance. If your child is absent, please inform the school office as soon as possible via (01244) 259800 or admin@uptonhigh.co.uk and provide a clear reason. Tutors and pastoral staff monitor attendance carefully and will contact parents/ carers if patterns of absence arise.

By attending school consistently, learners not only improve academically but also develop responsibility, resilience, and readiness for future opportunities. Together, we can help every learner achieve their best.

A reminder that learners, including those in our 6th form, must be on site by 8.35 a.m. ready for registration at 8.40 a.m. Registers close at 9.15 a.m. and arrival after this time will result in a U code (unauthorised morning absence)

Thank you for your continued support.

Stay Safe Bulletin - January 2026 Focus: Body Image

Focus: Body Image

WHAT IS BODY IMAGE?

Body image is how you see yourself when you look in the mirror or when you picture yourself in your mind. It encompasses:

• What you believe about your own appearance.

• How you feel about your body, including your height,

  shape, and weight.

• How you sense and control your body as you

move. How you physically experience or feel in your body.

• Beliefs about body image sometimes go beyond

body size and shape. Gender identity, skin tone, how our

body functions and many different elements contribute

to how we feel about ourselves and our bodies

Many of us internalize messages starting at a young age

that can lead to either positive or negative body image. Having a healthy body image is an important part of mental wellbeing and eating disorders prevention.

HOW CAN BODY IMAGE AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH?

Struggling with your body image can

lead to feelings of:

• Low self-esteem

• Depression

• Anxiety

• Isolation and loneliness

• Eating problems

• Obsessing over how you look

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK

  • NOTICE HOW SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECTS YOUR BODY IMAGE - Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad
  • BE KIND TO YOURSELF - Try not to compare yourself to images you see online. These are often digitally changed to make them look ‘perfect’
  • FOCUS ON GOOD THINGS - Focus on the things you like about yourself or parts of your body you like
  • SPEND TIME WITH PEOPLE WHO MAKE YOU FEEL POSITIVE ABOUT YOURSELF

Sixth Form Charity Week

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are pleased to inform you that Sixth Form Charity Week will take place from Monday 2 February to Friday 6 February.

Throughout the week, learners will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of fun and engaging activities, including dodgeball, sponge a teacher, staff karaoke, inter-year football tournaments, and many more.

On Friday 6 February, there will be a non-uniform day for all learners. We kindly ask that learners bring in a donation of £1 to support this year's chosen charities.

To make the most of the week, a Charity Week Pass will be available to purchase via ScoPay for £5. This pass gives learners access to two bake sale items and four activities during the week. If purchased, the pass can be collected from Student Finance by the learner.

There is also the option to purchase a raffle entry at £1. The raffle will be drawn the week after Charity week and prizes passed on to learners. We would be very grateful for any donations of raffle prizes to support our Sixth Form Charity Week raffle. Donations can be handed in to the front of school or a learner can pass this on to their form tutor by the 28th January.

As always there will be the opportunity to make additional donations on ScoPay.

This year, the Sixth Form students have chosen to split the money raised between the following charities:

  • LetsFarm – a small, community-led working farm in Cheshire supporting people with learning disabilities
  • SPACE – a charity supporting parents and children with learning disabilities
  • Maggie’s – a cancer charity supporting individuals and their families

Thank you for your continued support in helping our learners raise funds for these worthwhile causes.

Yours sincerely,
The Sixth Form Team
