Headteacher's Message

Welcome to this final bulletin of the school term.

The highlight of this week was the school's dance show.  This took place on Tuesday evening, and it was wonderful to see so many learners participating in this and also to see so many of you in the audience.  It really was an uplifting evening and a great opportunity for our learners to showcase their talents.

Upton’s football teams have enjoyed an excellent season. Year 9 were crowned district cup champions with a 5–1 win over Bishop Heber and now await their county cup semi-final after Easter. Year 8 finished runners‑up in the Chester and District Cup, while Year 7 impressed in their debut, narrowly losing the final to Kings School on penalties; the 6th form team also fell in their final, 8–7 on penalties. Both Year 10 and Year 11 reached their respective semi‑finals. The Year 7/8 girls team also made the district cup semi‑final, losing 4–2 to Bishop Heber, and the Year 9/10 team are awaiting their semi‑final against Christleton.

As we move from the Spring Term into the Summer Term, we do so with a strong sense of momentum and optimism for the opportunities that lie ahead. The months ahead are always some of the most rewarding in the school year, filled with activities, trips, and moments of celebration across our community. For our Year 11 and Year 13 learners in particular, this term marks the beginning of the examination season, a significant milestone that reflects years of hard work and commitment. For some of these learners, it also represents their final weeks at Upton-by-Chester High School, making this a time of both challenge and reflection. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and will continue to support them every step of the way as they approach this important stage in their journey.

Construction of the new Upton-by-Chester High School building is progressing well, with work having begun on site in October 2025 and now moving forward at pace. Foundations have been completed and the main structure is starting to take shape, with steelwork, concrete floors, staircases and lift shafts currently being installed. Key infrastructure such as drainage is also underway. Over the coming weeks, this progress will become even more visible as roofing and the external building envelope begin, alongside internal floor works. A recent steel signing ceremony marked an important milestone in the project, celebrating the collective effort of the school, Department for Education, and construction partners. Overall, the project remains on track and it is exciting to see the new school building steadily becoming a reality.

The last day of this term is on Wednesday and school will close at the normal time.

I wish you all a wonderful spring break and look forward to seeing all our learners when they return to school on Monday 20th April.

With very best wishes,

Mr L Cummins

Parking at school pick up and drop off times

Dear Parents/Carers,

We kindly ask all parents and carers to park considerately when collecting and dropping off learners.

We have received concerns regarding the parking situation at the start and end of the school day. Currently, vehicles are parking on one side of the road while buses are stationed on the opposite side, which is causing significant congestion and obstructing the flow of traffic. For safety and accessibility reasons, we ask that cars do not park directly opposite buses during pick-up times.

In addition, some vehicles are being parked on grass verges, which is causing damage. There have also been instances of driveways being blocked, preventing residents from accessing and/or leaving their properties. We respectfully ask that all drivers remain mindful of local residents and avoid blocking entrances.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep our school community safe, respectful, and accessible for everyone.

Kind regards,

Mrs Bradbury

Deputy Headteacher

Stay Safe Bulletin Mental Health Awareness April 2026

     Focus: Mental Health Awareness: Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. For example, you may feel worried and anxious about sitting an exam or a job interview.

Spot the signs of anxiety: It's important to recognise your symptoms of anxiety, reasons for them and how to take action.

Face your fears gradually: Avoiding situations can make our anxiety worse. Slowly facing up to things you find challenging may help.

Challenge unhelpful thoughts: Try to catch negative thoughts and

replace them with more realistic ones.

Set up a daily “worry time”: To address or write down your concerns.

Reduce tension with relaxation exercises: Check out these helpful

mindfulness and meditation videos. (https://www.nhs.uk/every-mind-matters/mental-wellbeing-tips/what-is-mindfulness/)

If anxiety gets too much for us or if it persists, it can have a negative impact on our daily life. The good news is that there are simple ways to help manage symptoms of anxiety and one of the key ones is physical activity.

Start small and build up slowly: To the recommended 150 minutes of

physical activity a week if you can. Why not try a free NHS-approved app – such as Couch to 5k and Active 10 – to get moving?

Choose a physical: activity you will enjoy. It will be much easier to keep motivated if you pick something you like.

Make being active fun: Listen to a new podcast while on a brisk walk or invite a friend or a family member to join.

Go outside: Whether it’s your local park or common, being out in nature helps to clear the mind.

Physical activity not always front of mind? Keep your active kit next to your front door as a reminder.

1. Being aware of unhelpful thoughts: Learn to ask yourself whether your thoughts are helpful

or not? Is there a different way to see the situation? What would you say to a friend?

2. Focus on now: Spend time focusing on the present instead of getting stuck on the past or worrying too much about the future. You could try relaxation techniques and mindfulness.

3. Getting enough rest: Make sure you have enough down time before bed and a good sleep routine with a regular bedtime and wake up time.

4. Connecting with others: Make time for socialising with friends and family or online communities where you are able to talk about the way you feel.

5. Living a healthy lifestyle: Eating well and getting enough exercise for your physical health can help to boost your mental wellbeing too.

6. Do something for yourself: Have some ‘me time’ by spending regular time on the things that make you happy, whether that’s a hobby, trying something new or relaxing.

Mental health support during school hours

There is support in our school for anyone wanting to discuss worries. You can speak to your Form tutor, your Pastoral Support Manager or Head of Year or a member of staff who you feel you can talk to. The best time to do this is before 8.40am in the morning, at break, at lunch time or during PLaN. Learners in 6th Form: Please speak to either Mr Lewis, Director of 6th Form, Miss Simpson Head of Year 12, or Mrs Stickels, Pastoral Support Manager. Alternatively email SixthFormTeam@uptonhigh.co.uk.

Important: In a crisis, please do not contact members of staff outside of school hours since they will not be able to help you at that time. Please contact either local or national support found below:

Lost Property

We have received many items of equipment and clothing, including coats, PE kits, and valuables that have been lost or left behind by learners. If your child has misplaced any items, please instruct them to come to Student Reception to see if we have them stored in our cupboards.

Any items that remain unclaimed at the end of next week will be donated to local charity.

We always do our best to reunite any lost items with their owners but it is not always easy to identify who they belong to. We strongly advise that all uniform, PE kits and coats are labelled with your child’s name in them, so we can identify any property and send a message for your child to collect them from Student Reception.
