Young Carers
Supporting Young Carers at Upton: Supporting Children who care for others
A young carer, in the UK is anyone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a family member with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or a drug or alcohol problem. This can include practical tasks like cooking, cleaning, or helping someone move around, as well as emotional support. Many young carers take on responsibilities well beyond those of their peers, which can affect their schoolwork, friendships, and time to relax.
At Upton, we recognise the incredible commitment our young carers show, and we work hard to make sure they feel understood, supported, and valued.
How We Identify and Support Young Carers
Self identification:
We deliver staff training, and assemblies to all our learners raise awareness within school. Learners and parent/carers can also access the website Live Well for support and services available.

Working with Primary Schools
As learners move up to Upton, we liaise closely with their primary schools to identify any young carers early. This helps us understand what support is already in place and how we can build on it.
Reaching Out to Families
Every Autumn Term, we send a letter to all parents and carers to make sure no young carer goes unnoticed. This gives families the chance to let us know if a child has recently taken on a caring role.
Partnership with Cheshire Young Carers
We maintain a strong relationship with Cheshire Young Carers, who regularly come into school to carry out educational assessments. These assessments help us – and our young carers – understand what level of support is needed. Support is always offered based on individual circumstances, with a bespoke caring package.
Staff Champions
Our Young Carer Champions, Mr J Keegan (Assistant Head) and Mrs J Jackson (Assistant SENCO), are key staff members who make themselves known to students. They are always available for a chat, guidance, or help with any issues that may arise. Our governors are fully supportive of our Young Carers.

We Are Here For You
Being a young carer can sometimes feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. At Upton, we are committed to ensuring that every young carer has the support they need to thrive both in and out of school. If you think you might be a young carer—or know someone who is—please speak to Mr Keegan, Mrs Jackson, or any trusted member of staff.
