Mother Tongue Other Tongue

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a free to enter, national competition from Manchester Metropolitan University open to learners aged between 8 and 18.

Mother Tongue asks learners, who do not have English as a first language, to share a lullaby, poem or song from their Mother Tongue. They then write a short piece in English to explain the poem’s significance to them. Other Tongue asks learners to create an original poem in a second language they are learning (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Urdu, or Mandarin).

So learners do not have to currently be studying a language to enter and it is open to all year groups. We would like learners to create a piece, typed or handwritten, along with any illustrations, take a picture and email it to Mrs Trott in our Languages Department. Our deadline is 21st May to give time to submit all entries to Manchester Metropolitan University. There will be departmental prizes for all entries so get creative!
