Mathematical Success

Thirteen of our learners scored top marks in the nationwide Mathematics Trust’s Senior Challenge in October.

Together with junior competitions, the Mathematics Trust receives over 700,000 entries.

“I have been highly impressed with the quality of maths in the 6th Form at Upton. For thirteen of our learners to receive either a Gold, Silver or Bronze commendation is remarkable”, said Mr John Biard, Head of Mathematics.

The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice Challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Senior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience. Learners’ participation in the Challenge is highly regarded by all universities and will be an integral part in the process of early applications and UCAS.
