Literacy

Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that allows us to communicate effectively and make sense of the world. At Upton-by-Chester High School we place an importance on all learners further developing their skills of literacy.

Our literacy policy follows the DRIVE framework.

  • D : Disciplinary Literacy
  • R : Reading Competency
  • I : Intervention
  • V : Vocabulary
  • E : Effective Feedback

Literacy is led by the Whole School Literacy Leader, Mrs J. Thomson. It is line managed by a Senior Leader in the school, currently Mrs K. McCarthy (Deputy Headteacher).

In February 2025, the school was inspected by Ofsted.  They said of reading at the school;

"The school promotes a culture of reading. Pupils of all ages encounter a broad range of high-quality texts that encourage them to reflect on important themes and issues. The school’s support for pupils in key stage 3 who struggle with their reading is a strength. Skilled staff help these pupils to catch up quickly with their peers."
